A diesel particulate filter collects more than just soot. Over time, it can accumulate soot, carbon deposits and inorganic ash. While regeneration can burn accumulated soot, inorganic ash is different. It doesn't simply disappear during regeneration.
That means foam coming out of the exhaust is not proof that the ash inside the DPF has been removed.

This is where DPF cleaning gets misunderstood.
A thick stream of foam exiting the exhaust may look impressive, but foam alone doesn't tell you what has actually been removed from the filter.
Is it soot?
Carbon?
Surface contamination?
Cleaning solution?
Or inorganic ash?
These materials behave differently, and treating them as if they are all the same can result in an incomplete cleaning process.
Soot and Ash Are NOT the Same
A DPF is designed to capture particulate matter from diesel exhaust.
During normal operation, soot accumulates inside the filter. The truck's regeneration system can raise temperatures high enough to oxidize much of this combustible soot.
But something remains behind.
Inorganic ash.
Ash can come from materials associated with lubricating oil additives, fuel-related residues and engine wear.
Unlike soot, ash is non-combustible.
So while regeneration can reduce soot loading, it does not simply burn accumulated ash away.
Over time, ash can occupy space inside the DPF and contribute to restriction.
What Does Foam Actually Tell You?
Foam tells you that a foaming cleaning product is interacting with the system.
That's it.
It doesn't automatically prove:
❌ The DPF is completely clean
❌ All soot has been removed
❌ All carbon deposits have been removed
❌ Inorganic ash has been removed
❌ Backpressure has been restored to an acceptable level
❌ The filter has returned to proper operating condition
A professional DPF cleaning process should be evaluated by what contamination was actually removed and whether the filter's performance has improved, not simply by how much foam was produced.
Soap-Based Cleaning vs. Chelation
This is an important distinction.
Some cleaning processes rely heavily on soap, detergents, TFR or other foaming products to loosen contamination.
These products may help with certain types of deposits.
But loosening surface contamination is not the same as chemically mobilizing inorganic ash.
Chelation works differently.
Specially formulated chelating chemistry is designed to interact with certain inorganic components and metal ions, helping mobilize deposits so they can subsequently be removed from the filter.
The goal isn't to create the biggest foam reaction.
The goal is to address the contamination that is actually restricting the DPF.
